Is this Fashion or Arts & Crafts?

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

49345755Remember how we were talking about deconstruction the other day? Well, this is a great example of what I meant by that.

Rodarte, with sister designers Laura and Kate Mulleavy at the helm, are the driving force behind this upcoming arts and crafts fad. We will be seeing lots of dresses evocative of cobwebs, for instance, and collages made of things like sandpaper silk, lace, leather, and cheesecloth in burnt plaids.

There will be a whole lot of braiding to be seen as well. Rodarte is weaving skirts and vests out of leather braid. Caroline Herrera has debuted a vest with rope weaving. Chado Ralph Rucci went one better and is offering a fabulous braided leather jacket, complete with tassels along the hem. Even Diane von Furstenberg has gone mad for macrame.

Get Ready for a Bright, Bold Spring!

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

49345247You might be thinking that it is way too early to start worrying about the fashion trends which will be showing up in spring of 2010, but come on! It is never too early to be prepared, right?

One thing that will be looming on the horizon is brightness. Although a lot of designers are going for deconstructed, monochromatic styles, many more recognize that bright, bold colors and lots of shine will be needed to put some vibrancy back into life after a long, cold, grey winter.

Designers are using sequins, as you can see in this coat dress designed by Phillip Lim. DKNY is following suit, as is Michael Kors.

There will also be plenty of prints, from dip dyes to floors to animal prints and even Rorschach inspired patterns!

How To Travel-Proof Your Hair!

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

Travel0903Your hair is something that can either make or break your look – seriously.  If you have a fantastic outfit but horrible hair, what do you think that people are going to remember?  The hair.  This is especially true if you are traveling all of the time.  If you are an avid traveler, you need to make sure that your hair is going to look good as soon as you get off of the plane … that is hard, unless you know how to do it!

Firstly, know that done up hair is sexy but undone hair is actually sexier when you are traveling.  You want to stay away from styles that are too sleek because honestly – it will not hold up in the airplane.  Pulling your hair back using your fingers and keeping your hairstyle pretty soft is a great way to ensure that your hair looks good as soon as you arrive at the location.

Another thing – pack the products that you want to use and make sure that they are good.  Elastics are a simple way to tame fly-aways and control frizziness and you can also use them to tie your hair in a low bun, which is very hot.

Fashionable Knits: They Are All The Rave Today!

Monday, September 7th, 2009

WomensChunkyKnitsWe all know that in the fall and winter months, they are full of grays, blacks and a lot of white, however – the one thing that they are not going to be filled with is chunky knits.  While I have not always been a fan of the knit in fashion, it seems that the runway is going to be filled with everything from knit dresses all the way to knit scarves.

The great thing about this trend?  Your grandmother can finally knit you that sweater and you can finally wear it and be fashionable!  The color doesn’t matter, however the way that it looks and the overall appeal of the clothing is very, very important – you want the knitting to be chunky, not fine knitting.

Remember chunky knitting – it’s the latest and greatest trend for the fall and winter months.  It will not only keep you warm, but I can promise that you will look awesome!

Go ‘Back to the Future’ with 80s Fashion

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

80s fashionI have some bad news. I don’t know how it happened. In many ways, it represents one of my biggest fears.

Somehow, some way … 80s fashion is coming back. Pretty soon we will be seeing lots of … acid washed denim. Lots of shoulder pads. Lots of bows — big ones — and lots of leotards. There might be leg warmers and big, bright geometric prints. There might even be trophy jackets.

The only redeeming quality of this inexplicable trend is that there will be a definitive 2009 kind of twist … but I don’t know how much better that makes the whole thing. It means that all that stuff up there gets paired with really sharp lines and close tailoring, ankle boots with a little chunk, and dewy, lolita like makeup.

There will be leggings and junk in colors like … oyster and coral. So you might end up looking like your grandma trying to dress up for some kind of 1980s theme party.

Give into Denim Madness!

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

denim trendLovers of comfortable jeans, rejoice, for Kawji brings you great news and tidings of great joy! Random ‘Peanuts’ quoting aside, I am dead serious here. Denim is going to be one of the biggest new trends. The difference between it and other trends, however, is that denim by itself is a classic wardrobe staple — typically in the form of jeans, true, but now designers are taking the fabric to a whole new level.

You may find yourself falling in love with a button down denim dress, for instance, or even a jumpsuit (though in all good conscience, I can’t really recommend that; no matter what the fabric, jumpsuits rarely work well. For anyone). Dungarees are all the rage — and of course jeans and shorts will still be a denim staple.
